Atypical n-hour clock where 1+6=2; choose n so that 1+12=2
Exercise 1 - For all candidates
1. An atypical watch. When you look at a watch displaying the time, the small (hour) hand is at position 12 (hours) at a graduation marked 1 (hour); it returns to position 1 (hour), as the sketch opposite shows, so that in some sense 1+12=1.
Rather than dividing the day into 12 hours, it is decided to divide it arbitrarily into n≥2 hours.
(a) Choose n=5; sketch it opposite. Justify that, following the movement of the small hand, one would have 1+6=2. Would it identify with 1+12?
(b) How should n be chosen so that, this time, 1+12=2? Draw a corresponding clock.
Esercizio 1 - Per tutti i candidati
Translation: rewrite ambiguous media sentences in plain terms
Exercise 1 - For all candidates
2. Translation. Express in plain terms what the following sentences mean (read figuratively, as people commonly do in the media!):
(a) “It is undeniable that Beethoven would not have been the great composer he was had he not been deaf.”
(b) “The town hall rejects the cancellation request submitted by the association Organisons le premier Championnat de vitesse d’escargots (‘Let us organise the first snail-racing championship’), invoking the municipal decree forbidding such a removal” - replace these two or three sentences with simple, clear phrases that show you have understood.
Traduzione: riscrivere le frasi ambigue in media in termini semplici
Esercizio 1 - Per tutti i candidati
2. Traduzione.
Conical flute filled to half height: how many such flutes can be filled
Exercise 1 - For all candidates
3. And to do mathematics is not what does us harm. A champagne coupe has a conical shape. Several identical coupes are filled, each up to half of its height h. How many coupes can be filled in this way?
Flotta conica riempita a metà altezza: quanti flutti possono essere riempiti
Esercizio 1 - Per tutti i candidati
Max tilt angle of a hemispherical glass filled to half its height
Exercise 1 - For all candidates
4. Or rather, a little. A glass is formed by a hemisphere (represented opposite in cross-section by a semicircle for the drawing). The glass is filled up to half of its height h. What is the maximum angle of inclination at which one can tilt the glass without spilling the liquid?
Esercizio 1 - Per tutti i candidati
Group dinner with minimum takings and a subsidy: price per person, optimum group size
Exercise 1 - For all candidates
5. But mathematicians have the right to eat. A group of about a hundred people reserves a dinner at a restaurant on the Nice seafront. Under normal conditions, the price of the meal is 40 euros per person. But the manager requires that the takings (i.e. the total of what the group pays) reach at least 4000 euros, in order to cover the risk should some guests withdraw (default).
(a) Justify that if n≥100 people come, each pays 40 euros; whereas if there are defections, with only n<100 people coming, they would each pay more. How much does each pay when only 90 people come?
(b) The group obtains a State subsidy of 1000 euros. How much does each pay when only 90 people come? When 120 people come? And exactly how many people must come so that the price each pays is minimal?
Esercizio 1 - Per tutti i candidati
Cut a quarter-disk into two equal areas along the axis of symmetry: where to cut
Exercise 1 - For all candidates
6. And to take a dessert. Consider a portion of tart represented by an angular sector having the shape of a quarter of a disc (angular opening 2π). One wishes to divide it into two equal parts. But in an original way: by cutting it not along the angular bisector, but along the axis of symmetry, so that the area of the right piece would equal the area of the left piece. Where should the cut be made? (One will introduce all the variables necessary to solve the problem.)
Esercizio 1 - Per tutti i candidati
de Gua’s theorem: square of oblique-face area equals sum of squares of the three right-angle faces
Exercise 1 - For all candidates
7. 3D Pythagoras (de Gua’s theorem). Show that, in a trirectangular tetrahedron (three right angles at one vertex), that is to say a corner of a rectangular parallelepiped, the square of the area of the oblique face equals the sum of the squares of the areas of the three other faces.

Esercizio 1 - Per tutti i candidati
Exercise 2 intro and examples: show 6 is balanced (balance 2), 7 is not, 204 has balance 84
Exercise 2 - For candidates of the general stream following the ‘spe maths’ specialty
Recall that for every non-zero natural number m:
1+2+3+⋯+m=2m(m+1)
and, more generally, that for every non-zero natural number n and every non-zero natural number b:
(n+1)+(n+2)+(n+3)+⋯+(n+b)=2b(2n+b+1).
When n is an integer at least equal to 2, we say that n is a balanced number if one can find a non-zero integer b such that:
1+2+3+⋯+(n−1)=(n+1)+(n+2)+⋯+(n+b).
In this case, the integer b is unique and is called the balance of n.
For example, 35 is a balanced number, since 1+2+3+4+⋯+34=595 and (35+1)+(35+2)+⋯+(35+14)=595. The balance of 35 is 14.
1. Some examples
(a) Show that 6 is a balanced number and specify its balance.
(b) Show that 7 is not a balanced number.
(c) Show that 204 is a balanced number of balance 84.
Risposta: 6 has balance 2; 7 is not balanced; 204 has balance 84

Show n^2-n=2bn+b^2 and b=(-(2n+1)+sqrt(8n^2+1))/2; conclude n balanced iff 8n^2+1 is a perfect square
Exercise 2 - For candidates of the general stream following the ‘spe maths’ specialty
2. Link between balanced numbers and perfect squares. Recall that a natural number c is a perfect square if there exists an integer e such that c=e2. Thus 16=42 and 36=62, whereas 17 and 18 are not perfect squares. Let n be an integer at least equal to 2.
(a) Suppose in this question that n is a balanced number; let b be its balance. Show that n2−n=2bn+b2, then deduce that b=2−(2n+1)+8n2+1. Deduce from this that 8n2+1 is a perfect square.
(b) Suppose in this question that 8n2+1 is a perfect square; let e be the integer 8n2+1. Show that e is odd, then that the real b defined by b=2−(2n+1)+e is a strictly positive integer.
(c) Conclude that n is a balanced number if and only if 8n2+1 is a perfect square.
Generating function f(x)=3x+sqrt(8x^2+1); auxiliary g,h; sequence u_1=6, u_{k+1}=f(u_k) of balanced numbers
Exercise 2 - For candidates of the general stream following the ‘spe maths’ specialty
3. A generating function. Consider the function f defined on R by
f(x)=3x+8x2+1.
(a) Verify that for every real x, 8(f(x))2+1=(8x+38x2+1)2.
(b) Deduce from it that if n is a balanced number, then f(n) is also.
Set u1=6 and, for every integer k≥1, uk+1=f(uk).
(c) Show that (uk)k≥1 is a strictly increasing sequence of balanced numbers.
(d) Show that for every integer k≥2, uk−1=3uk−8uk2+1.
Consider the functions g and h defined on ]0,+∞[ by
g(x)=3x−8x2+1andh(x)=3x−8x+1.
(e) Show that the function h is strictly increasing on ]0,+∞[ and deduce that g is also. [Then, reasoning by contradiction by assuming there exists a balanced number n greater than uk for some integer k≥1 that is not a perfect square in this sense, show the required property.]
(f) Compute u2. Admitting that the only balanced numbers strictly less than 36 are 6 and 35, deduce that if n>u2 then there exists an integer m≥2 such that um<n<um+1. Conclude.
Conclusione.

(a) Establish that for every integer k≥2, uk+1=6uk−uk−1.
(b) Consider the following function mystere(n), which takes as argument an integer n at least equal to 2:
def mystere(n): s=1 i=2 while i<n: s=s+i i=i+1 return s
Explain what the function mystere(n) computes.
(c) Write a function equilibre(n) taking as argument an integer n at least equal to 2 and returning True if n is a balanced number and False otherwise (one may use the approach of question 4a or of question 4b, explaining nevertheless which method is reasonably usable on the computer).
